La Noche de los Libros 2017

2017 January - April (4 months)

Main role: Support Designer (Intership)

Secondary role: Coordination and support at "Real Casa de Postas"

Tasks

  • To elaborate all the creativities needed for the event
  • To meet deadlines while working in other projects

Client

  • Community of Madrid, Govern, politics affects its desing decisions (main stakeholder)
  • Libraries and small book shops, they want material to exhibit

Context

  • LNL is a big public event which takes place every year during a weekend at Madrid. It was the main project for Magmacultura that year.
  • There were constant changes derived from authorities, providers and famous attendees (Eduardo Mendoza, Irvine Welsh ...)
  • Magma hired a design studio (Rifle studio) to lead the design project

My role

Support designer

  • Support graphic designer (working for Rifle Studio)
  • Redesigns, sketches, mock-ups, layout document...
  • Production and control of final arts
  • Support and coordinator (non-design job) at Real Casa de Postas. I was able to work directly at street level when the event was taking place. I supported the team in Real Casa de Postas were ateliers for kids were taking place and I coordinated parents.

Challenges faced

Provider tried to fool us

  • Poster archive had all it text pased to curves, it was uneditable so I had to solve this and prepare the final art.
  • Provider tried to fool us by changing the pantone color. As I was responsible for the main poster final art all responsibility fell at me, but I was sure that the file sent was correct (I had revised it three times before sending it). I let my leader to have a look, at the end it was shown that the provider wanted to fool us all (we terminated all relationships with him and all creativities had to be remade).

Pin button badge

Could you make it bigger & deciding

  • Community of Madrid (Govern) had a thing with the logo, every weak we received a call asking us to make a bigger logo (red logo). It almost broke the visual identity.
  • Every change was a delay in the printing process, this and the change of printing provider due to previous one tried to fool us, made us to reach almost limit date without pin button badges.
  • I decided finally which button badge color we should print based in the models we had in the absence of the design project leader.

Hey, Héctor could you do this?

Solving a problem of hours in 10 minutes

  • This is the type of work that nobody wants to do and someone has to solve.
  • There was a large text document with special formatting and layout which could not be edited, and for that reason it had to be redone by hand again. It ended in my hands.
  • It took me just five minute to extract all the text with specialized software and a few minutes to give it some formatting.
Photoshop automation

Competences acquired

  • Responsability to take decisions in absence of leader.
  • Ability to work in parallel projects while mantaining quality and meeting deadlines (prioritizing).
  • Ability to understand how much external variables (politics, providers, clients...) can affect design projects.

Conclusions

  • Being able to participate in such a big project helped me to understand that if something can happen it will happen.
  • Being able to escape from my designer role showed me how pieces were working in a real enviroment with real users.
  • The quantity of changes made to some pieces were astounding, I had to prioritize a lot, luckily I could use software and my managment skills to answer fast to different demands.
